Woodland Natives
Project type
Competition
Date
2022
Location
London
Set within a copse and perched on existing pathways the three Woodland Natives define and activate the space around the silver lime. The space between the structures becomes a place for play and craft. The family of structures peek out from among the trees and attract visitors with their expressive biomorphic forms and richly textured surfaces.
The treehouses explore our historical relationship with forestry and traditional crafts in order to challenge the practices of the industrial timber industry.
The treehouses are built from locally harvested roundwood using traditional carpentry skills. The walls are clad in layers of hazel hurdles made on site during expert led workshops. Some hurdles will be dyed and woven through with woollen felt to exaggerate the sculptural form of the structure. Bird boxes and insect hotels will be integrated into the structures and waste material will be left in-situ to form habitats for insects and fungi.
Each structure has been designed to accommodate a range of activities and workshops that explore various aspects of coppicing and silviculture such as basket weaving, charcoal burning, hurdle making, traditional joinery, biodiverse habitat management, bird watching and coppicing demonstrations.
